PONGO DE MAINIQUE EXPEDITIONS 6 DAYS / 5 NIGHTS

From the magical town of Cusco nestled in the high Andes, to the tropical climate of the Pongo de Mainique in the rich jungle. With fantastic opportunities to see blue and gold, scarlet and greenwing macaws, lowland tapir’s, peccaries among other animals. With lots of primary jungle this tour takes you to all these places and gives a stunning impression of Peru. Day 01: Cusco – Quillabamba
Today we begin our descent down into the jungle. Taking our private transport we head out of the valley, north to the town of Quillabamba. Driving over the Abra de Malaga at 4300m down into high jungle with its coffee and banana plantations to our rest place for the night, the small market town of Quillabamba.

Day 02: Quillabamba – Palma Real - Quillabamba to Kiteni
Breakfast and we continue further north following the mighty Urubamba River, with its twists and turns. Our guide will teach us about the area, the spectacular flora and fauna, the birds and the fruit in this vibrant area in Cusco, Peru. Tonight we will sleep and eat under the stars.

Day 03: Palma Real – Ivochote
Passing through small jungle towns with their effervescent atmosphere we make our way to the port of Ivochote. Here we will board our motorized canoe for the journey through the magical Pongo de Mainique and the rich jungle. On arrival to the Pongo we will have the opportunity to admire the beauty of this truly spiritual area and the waterfall portal to the afterlife for the Machiguenga Indians.
We will then leave the Pongo for Esperanza campsite our home for the next few days.

Day 04: Ivochote – Pongo de Mainique – Esperanza
An early rise so that we may visit a Macaw Claylick, which is feeding area for Macaws and is situated near our campsite. On our return we will have breakfast and an expertly guided tour of the various plantations that make up our jungle centre. For those that want we will take to the jungle trails to see the incredible scenery, to learn about the indigenous plants and animals in the area. If you are staying at base you can relax in a hammock and watch the world go by. All meals served in camp.

Day 05: Esperanza
Today gives us the perfect chance to do whatever we want, if we want to walk in the jungle our guide is available to escort us, if we want to try our hand at fishing that is another option or maybe just relax. We also have a fantastic opportunity to go to the Pongo de Mainique for a few hours, swim by the waterfall and bask on a rock watch the world go by. All meals served in camp.

Day 06: Esperanza – Timpia – Cusco
An early rise and we board the canoe for the one hour journey trip to the Machiguenga town of Timpia and the airport. Before boarding our one hour flight to Cusco we have the option to visit Timpia and buy some last minute hand crafted gifts.
On return to Cusco transfer to our hotel.
